Why Independent Fashion Designers Are Changing the Way We Discover Fashion

by Stephanie Williams

Over the years, how has the meaning of “finding good fashion” changed for you? The meaning of fashion, while highly subjective and dependent on personal experience, has objective principles that make it a uniquely discernible language. Your aesthetic taste may differ from mine, for example, but a finished piece has specific, identifiable qualities, and basic technical design of a garment must be secured before turning to the creative side of fashion design.

In the past, you may remember peering at a glossy magazine cover in the grocery aisle, and receiving a great deal of fashion inspiration from that. In the 1990s, social media platforms like MySpace may have inspired you to take “scene queen” and “emo girl” looks to a different level. Nowadays, with the advancement of artificial intelligence and other technologies, we have so many forms of fashion media at our fingertips that we never would have dared to imagine. The world of fashion has become increasingly creative and complex, but also arguably less “pure.”

One aspect of fashion that tends to be overlooked is its increasing sense of personalization, particularly in the indie designer world. Traditional fashion discovery lacks the sense of meaning and personal connection that independent designers have, which is why we here at Wanderobe value indie designers so strongly. We value sophistication and elegance, but we also value having a sense of humanity. When Wanderobe selectively chooses our designers, it is quite an intentional process, with a simultaneous sense of elevated luxury and personal connection in mind.

Social media has certainly changed our perspective on the landscape of fashion as well as the sense of who is allowed to “gate keep” within the industry. Refinement is important to us at Wanderobe, but the ways in which we make ourselves discoverable on social media is through taking advantage of networking opportunities on platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, or TikTok.

If we didn’t have indie designers at Wanderobe, it would not be the same experience for us. We believe that having a unique perspective on travel, fashion, and making vital fashion industry connections, gives us exactly what we need as a brand.

So, what holds you back from making a travel experience part of your wardrobe?
